Davenport vaulted back in front 28-23 early in the third quarter on a three-yard rushing TD from phenomstole the lead back with a three-yard score of his own, and the Hawks went up 31-28 thanks to his ensuing two-point conversion. Early in the fourth quarter,gave Canyon Lake the separation they needed with a two-yard TD run for a 38-28 lead.
The game itself got off to a slow start. Both teams used long, methodical drives to drain the clock in the first quarter, as the Bears built a 3-0 lead. La Vernia was the first to find the end zone in the second quarter. Quarterbackcommand late in the drive with a pair of crucial QB-keepers and scored a three-yard touchdown that gave the Bears a 10-3 halftime lead
. La Vernia went on to win the game 17-9, marking their fourth straight victory. The Bears are now 2-0 in District 15-4A Division I and still have huge games against Pleasanton, Beeville Jones and Rockport-Fulton on their schedule to round out the season.
