Sure, it has the 'Little House on the Prairie' look, but the plants serve a purpose on hot summer days.

Felder said he decided he wanted a green roof — which is covered with low-growing, drought-tolerant, sun-loving plants — after seeing something similar atop a library in Colorado. The topography of the yard, which slopes down from front to back, also helped prompt the decision.

Felder said the grass grows attractive brown shoots that hang down from the roof, while the garlic’s small purple blooms have a pungent aroma said to repel mosquitoes. The flowers also attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, especially in springtime. So, McWhirter made it a more family-friendly spot, a place where they could also entertain family and friends.Illuminated by strategically placed lighting, the yard resembles a calming, compact zen jungle. The centerpiece of this new backyard experience is a 40-by-40-foot square of artificial turf partially bordered by board-formed concrete walls with steel benches attached.

“The other area is more rowdy, while this is an area to connect with nature,” Felder said. “A place where the kids and others can come and sit and just have a moment with, like, the birds and the silence.”
