Voltaco's in Ocean City, a popular takeout spots for subs and Italian dishes, closes

Oct. 09, 2022, 12:45 p.m.It’s been a tough year for iconic Jersey Shore restaurants and food stops. Wards Pastry in Ocean City, the Cheese Cave in Red Bank, Avon Pavilion in Avon-by-the-Sea, the Inkwell in Long Branch, and Charlie’s Homemade Ice Cream in Seaside Park have all closed for good, citing various reasons — retirement, rising costs, medical issues.

Voltaco’s is not Ocean City’s oldest food business; Shriver’s, on the boardwalk, opened in 1898. But it may have been the most beloved. The blue-awninged shop on West Avenue — takeout only from the beginning — was adored by locals and visitors for its honest, homemade Italian food. A dozen employees bustled about in the kitchen Thursday, prepping for Voltaco’s last weekend in business. Sauce bubbled in a pot, hot peppers were ladled into tiny plastic cups. On Sunday, the doors close for good, the kitchen goes silent forever. Taccarino announced Voltaco’s“Since 1954, Voltaco’s has been here to serve our customers, locals and tourists alike, the best Italian takeout at the Jersey Shore," the post began.

“After much deliberation, we have come to the not-so-easy decision to make 2022 our last year in business. We do this with sadness in our hearts, as this life here is the only one we have truly ever known ..."
