'As the world digitalizes at an increasingly rapid pace, Congress can’t rely on banning individual platforms to protect young people online.' OpEd

, CSW67 called for the public and private sectors to create policies to end online violence, adopt regulations that safeguard data privacy, and develop digital literacy campaigns.

Luna Abadía, an 18-year-old who served as US Public Delegate at CSW67, states that although banning TikTok “could have benefits on mental health and undo some of the damage it has done to our social infrastructure and democratic processes, such a ban does not come close to addressing the root causes of the issues we are facing.”

According to Abadía, “We need safe, empowering, and equitable technology in people's hands, not just any technology…. We know the tools exist to develop and implement better practices. What is lacking is the incentive.” Rather than criminalizing a single app, Congress should pass a comprehensive national data privacy law, further online harassment prevention and platform accountability, require improved trust and safety features, and promote digital literacy.
