DeBerry believes a Republican can win the top elected position in Democrat-dominated Bexar...

Trish DeBerry, 57, a former Precinct 3 county commissioner, attends a 9/11 event at San Antonio American Legion Post 2 as she campaigns for Bexar County judge. Her optimism about the race hasn’t changed, but the political currents that seemed likely to benefit her have.

She notes that some “hardcore Democrats” at the courthouse were among those who asked her to run for county judge when Wolff decided not to seek re-election. In 2001, DeBerry helped run District 7 City Councilman Ed Garza’s mayoral campaign against District 9 Councilman Tim Bannwolf, a business-backed conservative from the North Side. Garza won — and DeBerry lost the favor of some of her Republican friends and allies for a couple of years. He said DeBerry is putting the needs of Bexar County residents before her party. He likes that she’s discussing poverty, education and the need to attract more industries in her campaign.

DeBerry wants to bring more property tax relief to homeowners, create more jobs, help sustain small businesses and lower poverty rates. She’s also called for consideration of a merger between the city’s Metropolitan Health District and the county’s health system, University Health, to reduce costs and ramp up the fight against diabetes, heart disease and obesity.

Sakai has said his campaign isn’t involved in the dark money group, whose principals are unknown. But DeBerry has called on the Democrat to disavow the blistering ads. Without offering evidence, she also publicly accused Henry and his ad placement agency of being behind the ads. “For the most part, it was my mom and I,” she recalled. “My mom worked full time in civil service out at Fort Sam Houston.

DeBerry’s mother transferred from Fort Sam Houston to Kelly AFB but began having back problems and took a disability retirement. This cut into the family’s income when it was time for DeBerry to go to college. With little money for tuition, her mother asked her to enroll at the University of Texas at San Antonio. DeBerry attended classes there for two years, then transferred to Trinity University with the help of a scholarship and a student loan.

Guerra DeBerry Coody drew widespread media coverage for its on-site day care for its employees’ children. In 2009, DeBerry surprised political prognosticators by launching a long-shot bid for San Antonio mayor. She lost to Julián Castro — capturing 29 percent of the vote to his 56 percent — but managed to introduce herself to voters outside the realm of political and business insiders.

She discovered the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office hadn’t had a dedicated prosecutor in its elder fraud unit for five years because of budgetary constraints and had a backlog of cases. She led Commissioners Court to fund a prosecutor and an investigator to restore that unit. She learned while campaigning for the North Bexar County seat that the county didn’t have a family leave policy. County employees were using sick time or comp time to take off from work when their children were born.

DeBerry also clashed famously and repeatedly during Commissioners Court meetings with Sheriff Javier Salazar when she questioned him about the county jail’s operations. As of last month, the Bexar County Adult Detention Center had racked up at least $12 million in overtime pay for detention officers and had about 230 vacant positions.

Salazar has claimed that DeBerry wants to privatize the jail, which DeBerry denies, saying she’s had no such discussions with private sector prison operators. “I’ll be the first to admit the jail — and getting that situation under control — is vexing, and it’s a beast,” she said. “But I just felt like there hadn’t been enough of a deep dive to really take a look at what we might be able to do better.”“I will fight tooth and nail,” the sheriff said. “It’s not hurting the West Side; it’s not hurting the inner city.”“I don’t think she’d make a good county judge at all,” Salazar said.

“She’s a dishonest person,” he said. “Clearly no respect for me as an elected official. Wouldn’t put anything past her. Let’s meet out in the open in front of witnesses.” Nelson Wolff, a longtime friend and political mentor of DeBerry, stopped short of commenting on her campaign. He is supporting Sakai in the race.
