An Alabama police department drew outrage after its police chief announced the arrest of an 82-year-old woman who did not pay her trash bill on social media.
Valley Police Chief Mark Reynolds claimed the department’s hands were tied on whether to handcuff Martha Louis Menefield after a magistrate signed off on her arrest for failure to pay trash, adding that the 82-year-old woman “was treated respectfully by our officers in the performance of their duties.”
Tuesday. “Ms. Menefield was treated respectfully by our officers in the performance of their duties and was released on a bond as prescribed by the violation.”The chief said Menefield was cited for non-payment of trash services in August for nonpayment in June, July and August.“Absolutely the most ridiculous thing I have seen this year,” one commenter replied. “You should all be ashamed to call yourselves law enforcement.
“The citation advised Ms. Menefield that she was to appear in court on September 7, 2022, in reference to this case,” the chief said. “A warrant for Failure to Pay-Trash was issued when she did not appear in court.”
