The best places to get kolaches are usually on the road in a small Texas town. But these fruity and savory baked goods are just as good — and maybe even better.
Creating this guide to Houston's best kolaches was an effort that involved many miles and many gallons of gasoline. Eating kolaches, sometimes several in a row, isn't always great on the stomach. It could also be a little heartbreaking when popular places let me down — some of the bakeries had to be cut from the list as a result.
But the research was educational: I ventured to parts of Houston I normally don't and found that I have a morning-time sweet tooth, thanks to the many fruit kolaches I scarfed down in my Honda Fit. I also learned that it is not a very good idea to give jam-filled pastries to my 1-year-old son, who has yet to learn proper fork and spoon etiquette.
The kolaches here represent the city's top kolache options in my opinion. this Galveston gem. She was right. Good Dough is one of the best kolache places I've visited in Texas — period.As the name implies, I was thoroughly impressed with the kolache dough here. A blueberry variety had a bread that seemed to toe the line between fluffy and dense. And farther in, the fruit jam inside held a tartness and freshness that I haven't been able to find at any other kolache shop. Below the jam was a layer of cream cheese that only helped to deepen the flavors.
