Willem Dafoe's Inside is a thought-provoking thriller that revolves around art, and his character becomes part of one giant installation.
When Willem Dafoe's Nemo takes on a routine heist during Inside, he expects to steal a few priceless paintings from a millionaire's penthouse and slip out undetected - but once he's unexpectedly locked in, several clues indicate that he's the one who becomes a piece of art. What was supposed to be an easy job quickly turns into a nightmare, and when Nemo is cut off from his handler on the radio, he realizes that the penthouse has become a prison.
With most alarm systems of this kind, the homeowner receives a call to confirm an emergency from a surveillance technician and if they can't be reached, a first responder is dispatched to the address, but neither of those happen. Curiously, the security guard on duty in the apartment building, whom Nemo can see on a feed through the television screen, pays no heed to the alarm and doesn't so much as call up from the front desk.
Much like Christopher Nolan's inventive thriller movie Tenet used an important painting subplot to express the motivations of its characters, there is a painting with significance to Nemo's character development as well. He initially enters the penthouse for several priceless paintings, but one in particular, the "Self Portrait" is cleverly hidden, and Nemo only finds it once he's already suffered from exhaustion and dehydration.
