The recently-opened 2d Restaurant in Lakeview is centered around a unique, Parisian comic book-inspired aesthetic. The menu features pon de ring doughnuts made with mochi and tapioca starches, an intriguing dessert that's immensely popular in Taiwan and Japan.
The concept is the work of couple Kevin Yu and Vanessa Vu. Yu was born in Taiwan, while Vu is from Vietnam. They met in Seattle but ended up in Chicago thanks to Yu’s childhood memories of a certain basketball team. “Back in the 1990s, the Chicago Bulls were everything,” Yu said. “That’s the reason why we are in Chicago.”At first, Yu worked in various restaurants, while Vu focused on interior design, specializing in work for resorts.
Which doesn’t mean that Yu initially liked the idea. “I told her it was a horrible idea!” Yu said. “A black and white restaurant? It would be boring.” Not surprisingly, it took Vu 14 months to finish the detailed drawing. Then a mutual friend in Taiwan helped create a digital file to project on the white walls of the restaurant to paint with the help of local artist Mia Larson.
