Toyota’s hot GR Corolla will share key hardware with GR Yaris, plus a possible self-shifting option -
It’s expected that a six-speed manual transmission will be standard fit, but Gazoo Racing is publicly known to be developing a new fast-shifting eight-speed torque converter automatic transmission designed for its products. The new gearbox has already been revealed by Toyota in a GR Yaris development car, quashing rumours that Toyota’s more common CVT or a new dual-clutch would be made available.
What we do know, however, is that the Corolla will do without the extensive bespoke manufacturing and engineering that went into the GR Yaris as a result of its homologation car status. It’ll probably share the basic body-in-white of the standard Corolla and only feature bespoke bumpers and wheels, and perhaps new front wings if Toyota’s fiddled with the front track widths.
