The Elantra N is fantastic with either of its transmissions, but there are differences.

Naturally, we concentrated on acceleration. Like many automatic performance cars, the Hyundai Elantra N simplifies the process with a launch mode; it adds some interactivity to the process by allowing the driver to set the launch rpm. As it happens, the manual Elantra N has a launch mode, as well, which allows the driver to simply floor the accelerator and side-step the clutch pedal.

OK, OK, enough about technique—how fast did the car get to 60? We timed the manual Elantra N to 60 in 5.9 seconds, 0.8 second slower than the automatic car. Next, 100 mph came up in 14.4 seconds, well behind the DCT's 12.3. The stick trailed in the quarter mile, as well: 14.4 seconds @ 100.1 mph versus 13.7 @ 103.9 with the DCT.

Obviously, there are several factors at work here. The manual Elantra N does without the 10-hp overboost function of the automatic car. The seven forward speeds in the DCT give a better spread than the six in the manual gearbox, and there are differences in both transmission hardware and final-drive gearing. The biggest issue is that the 0-60 run requires an upshift, and it takes time to step on the clutch pedal, change gears, and let the clutch back in.

Skidpad performance was slightly better in the manual car—1.00 g even versus 0.97 for the DCT-equipped Elantra N—but the stick was a smidge slower around our figure-eight course , circling in 25.0 seconds at an average grip of 0.74 g. The automatic Elantra N did it in 24.9 at 0.75. Road test editor Chris Walton noticed that lateral grip fell off with each lap, with neutrality giving way to understeer.

the manual-transmission Elantra beat out the Civic Si, WRX, GR86, and GTI in a recent comparison testAs far as manual transmissions go, the Hyundai Elantra N's is pretty darn good. The clutch is easy to modulate precisely , and the short-throw shifter, if not quite Honda-esque in its feel and precision, still makes for a great-feeling gearbox. Whether this first-rate manual experience is worth giving up nearly a second in 0-60 performance is up to the Elantra N's buyers.
