Lifeguards rescued two people from the water near the Pleasure Pier in Galveston on Saturday after one of them appeared to be in distress, according to authorities.
One of the swimmers was found submerged about 100 yards away from the pier, authorities said. Lifeguards and a surfer brought the swimmer ashore, where he underwent CPR. One of the men is visiting from North Carolina, authorities said.
Galveston Island Beach Patrol Chief Peter Davis said a rip current was in the area and signs warning of the danger were posted. No lifeguard was stationed nearby.
