Swimming ended early for beachgoers at two Long Island beaches on Sunday after officials reported a shark bite that morning.

Smith Point and Cupsogue beaches will be closed for the rest of Sunday, parks officials announced on Twitter.

A spokesperson for the county executive confirmed the closures were related to a shark bite. A release from that office stated the bite involved a Suffolk County lifeguard. Notice for Smith Point and Cupsogue beaches: swimming has been suspended due to dangerous marine activity as Sunday, July 3.
