Los Angeles city firefighters were called to the 400 block of North Gaffey Street, near the end of the 110 Freeway, just before 11:30 a.m.

and treated the two workers before taking them to hospitals, fire officials said. Their conditions were not immediately known., seven months after Regency Outdoor Advertising’s lease for the billboard had expired, officials said. The billboard had advertised various goods and services over the year, most recently featuring retirement-community and hospital ads, as well as COVID-19 messages.

Many believed it to be an eyesore, including City Councilmember Tim McOsker and his predecessor, Joe Buscaino, who had worked for years to have the billboard removed. Buscaino, in 2015, called the billboard a “thorn in my side.” With the start of work on Monday, McOsker called it a “great day for the community. The San Pedro residents came together, organized and persevered to beat a big, billion-dollar Goliath.”

Officials planned to focus on beautifying the pedestrian bridge that connects the Barton Hill and Peck Park neighborhoods following the billboard’s complete removal.
