There is no known risk to people who hunt, prepare or cook deer meat, officials say.
SARS-CoV-2, which can lead to COVID-19, has been detected in two free-ranging deer in Atlantic and Cumberland counties, the stateNew York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan and Ohio are the other states where the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services have reported the virus in deer.
There’s no indication that people who prepare or eat deer meet can become infected. In addition, officials say there’s no evidence that an infected deer can pass the virus to another species or that the overall deer population will significantly fall.Fish and wildlife officials said they’re not yet recommending hunter have deer tested.
Deer are far from the first wild animal to be infected with the virus. SARS CoV-2 has been found around the world in mink, leopard, and in zoo settings in big cats, gorillas, otters, binturong, coatimundi, fishing cats and hyenas.
