Here are some upcoming books to spend the (hopefully) cooler days and nights ahead.
Don’t look now — you don’t want to scare it away — but fall is on its way, after a brutal summer that we’d all probably rather forget. There’s something else to look forward to besides the cooler temperatures, though: the new season is bringing a variety of books for all kinds of readers to get lost in.The next few months will see the release of nonfiction books with topics ranging from American music to a former American president, and fiction dealing with themes of loss, love, and family.
What It’s About: Legal scholar Burnham takes a look at the systems that allowed White Southerners to terrorize Black people — with both the implicit and explicit blessing of the law — for decades in the Jim Crow era. Burnham’s book, recently named a finalist for the Kirkus Prize, seems likely to provide more context for the national conversation about racism, just as Ibram X. Kendi’s “Stamped from the Beginning” did in 2016. Hua Hsu /Cormac McCarthy / N.K.
What It’s About: The most anticipated political book of the fall hits shelves a month before Election Day. In her new book, New York Times reporter Haberman, who’s shown an ability to get inside scoop on Trump, chronicles the life and career of the former president. Expect revelations from the book to start leaking to the press in the weeks before its publication – as well as criticism that Haberman might have been holding back information in the public interest for use in her book.
