Disney's animated movie rules were set in stone until Frozen came along and shattered the old model and changed the future of Disney animation.
When it premiered in 2013, Frozen featured so many differences from the usual Disney model that it changed the studio's animated movies forever. The film is another fairy tale adaptation, following the story of "The Snow Queen" but focused on two sisters, Elsa and Anna, as the former deals with her dangerous ice powers. Frozen became a huge hit, as audiences couldn't get songs like "Let It Go" and "Love Is an Open Door" out of their heads.
9 Frozen Was The Animated Revival Disney Had Been Looking For Disney first revived itself in 1989 and through the 1990s with The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, and other hit films. However, once the Disney Renaissance era was over, the studio struggled to find another success on such a phenomenal level.
5 Frozen Doesn't Immediately Reveal Its Villain While Disney animated movies don't always plainly state who the villain is at the beginning, the role is usually pretty easy to figure out. Gaston didn't become violent until the end of Beauty and the Beast, but his misogynistic comments and arrogant attitude suggested he was no good early on in the film. Frozen tried something new by introducing Hans as a prince charming-type who quickly swept Anna off her feet.
