War films are important in confronting the horrors perpetrated by humans. However, this does mean some are so upsetting people can’t watch them twice.
Some war movies are so distressing they should only be watched once. Often adapting the horrors of real-life war, the war movie genre is understandably bleak. While incredibly important to show, these war movies are also harrowing to watch. Saving Private Ryan's opening scene is a great example of this. It shows the horrific scene of soldiers landing on Normandy for D-Day. The devastation of that day alone is enormous.
2 Schindler’s list Steven Spielberg's masterpiece, Schindler's List,, depicts the true story of Oskar Schindler, a German industrialist who saved over 1000 Jewish refugees from the Holocaust during World War II. Starring Liam Neeson in the title role, Schindler's List won 7 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. While undoubtedly a brilliant movie, Schindler's List is incredibly difficult to watch.
4 Dunkirk Dunkirk is a tragic retelling of the 1940 Dunkirk evacuation, during which over 338,000 Allied soldiers were evacuated from the titular beach in Normandy, France. Written, directed, and produced by Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk featured an all-star cast and received critical acclaim. In an interview on The Late Show, Kenneth Branagh, who plays the fictional Commander Bolton, recalls actual Dunkirk veterans remarked on the Dunkirk's accuracy.
6 Come And See Come and See is a Soviet anti-war film depicting the brutal Nazi occupation of Belarus during World War II. Based on a 1977 memoir, I Am from the Fiery Village, Come and See follows a young Belarusian teenager named Flyora. Flyora joins the Belarus resistance movement and witnesses all the atrocities inflicted upon the region.
Men Behind The Sun was criticized for its insensitive handling of Japanese war atrocities, but much of this indifference reflects the callous disregard for human life within Unit 731. Similarly, critics also suggested that the unflinching torture scenes delegate Men Behind The Sun, an exploitation film peddling gratuitous violence. This is also equally unfounded for an equally harrowing reason. These scenes recreate actual experiments carried out on prisoners in Japan during World War II.
9 The Painted Bird The Painted Bird was written, directed, and produced by Václav Marhoul and is filmed entirely in black and white. The movie's plot concerns a young Jewish boy from an unspecified Eastern European country seeking refuge during World War II. The Painted Bird opens with the boy, Joska, losing his only remaining family, and it only gets worse from there.
