Compared to films where the protagonist survives, the most incredible war movies that killed the hero examine heroism and mortality from a decidedly different angle. The death of a hero only gives more meaning to their life, and historically, true heroism and death are often inseprable. On the other hand, any death is already tragic, but death is especially heavy when it happens to the hero whom viewers hoped would survive.

Miller , Mike Horvath , Daniel Jackson , Stanley "Fish" Mellish died accomplishing what they set out to do - save Private James Francis Ryan . Before Miller bleeds out, however, he uses his dying breath to tell Ryan to earn the sacrifices that were made to save him from the war. The movie's last scene sees Ryan, now decades older, visiting Miller's grave at Normandy Cemetery with his family.
6 The 13th Warrior While The 13th Warrior protagonist Ahmad ibn Fadlan survives till the end, Buliwyf does not, and he's the real hero of the film. Befitting an heir apparent of his stature, Buliwyf dies in a glorious tableau on the battlefield, sitting by his sword after just cutting down more than his fair share of the Wendol, finally succumbing to the toxin inflicted earlier by the Mother's poisoned fingernail.
4 1917 Tasked with delivering intelligence that could save the lives of 1600 British soldiers during World War II, Lance Corporals Tom Blake and Will Schofield make their way through no man's land. There, they save a German pilot from the burning wreck of a recently downed plane. However, after Blake convinces Schofield to find water for the pilot, Schofield returns to see Blake getting mortally stabbed by the pilot, whom Schofield shoots.
